There are many different varieties of apples found all over the world, ranging from red to green in color. The taste among the different types varies considerably too, from sweet such as the Golden Delicious apple to tangy such as the Granny Smith apple.

Due to the great nutritional content of apples (see below), they have a number of health benefits as:

1. Avoid apples that are soft and discolored. Also visually check for quality such as bruising, decays or bad patches. Apples rich in their color have absorbed lots of sunlight which leads to great flavors. Ensure that the apple has a pleasant aroma. This will vary by variety with some apples (like Gala) having a stronger fragrance than others. With so many apple varieties available it is important to be familiar with the different types today, in particular, the characteristics, including color, size, shape, and overall appearance.

You’ll quickly learn which apples are best for baking (Golden Delicious apples, Rome apples) and which are better for fresh eating (Red Delicious apples, Honeycrisp apples). Apples should be stored at a temperature between 30 and 35 degrees F. with 90 – 95% relative humidity. With a small number of apples, a refrigerator is a good option. However, do not store other fruits or vegetables in the same drawer because apples give off ethylene gas, which can speed the decay of neighboring produce. If you have a large amount of apple, it is best storing them in a cool dark place that’s relatively humid, such as a cellar or garage, with the temperature close to freezing, but not below.
