A variety of the high bush blueberry was introduced into Europe during the 1930s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The shrubs that the fruit grow on can vary in size from 10 centimeters to 4 meters in height. The berries that grow on a low &#8211; level bush are known as &#8220;low bush&#8221; blueberries and these taste tart while the sweeter berries grow on the taller bushes known as &#8220;high bush&#8221; blueberries. These pea-sized berries are a deep blue-purple colour with a thin translucent skin and tiny seeds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Titled as the &#8220;superfood&#8221;, the fruit is very low in calories and full of essential nutrients (see below) which offer many health benefits as:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Potent in antioxidants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Blueberries are the king of antioxidants, containing the highest antioxidant capacity of all fruit and vegetables. Antioxidants are important as they help protect our bodies from damage by free radicals, which are molecules that that can damage cells and contribute diseases like cancer. Blueberries contain a high content flavonoids, which belong to a large family of polyphenols. One group of flavonoids named anthocyanins, is thought to be responsible for the health benefits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Supports the absorption of iron<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Blueberries contain a good amount of vitamins C which is essential for the absorption of iron.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Help reduce muscle soreness after exercise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Strenuous exercise causes inflammation and oxidative stress in the muscle tissue.<br \/>\nConsumption of blueberries can help reduce this inflammation and aid recovery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.
