They belong to the same plant family as squash, pumpkin, and watermelon known as the Cucurbitaceae family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Similar to the watermelon, cucumbers are mainly made up of water, hence a very good source of hydration. However, they contain many other properties (see below) beneficial to health such as:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. High in Nutrients.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, magnesium, potassium and manganese this fruit plays a role in supporting the immune system and bone health. For complete nutrition, cucumbers should be eaten unpeeled. The peel contains fiber as well as certain vitamins and minerals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. High in antioxidants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Any food high in antioxidants is great for health. Cucumbers are rich in antioxidants, including flavonoids and tannins which reduce the risk of chronic diseases by preventing the accumulation of harmful free radicals and in turn cell damage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Supports weight loss.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cucumbers are very low in calories. One cup serving contains just 16 calories, similarly, an 11 oz cucumber contains little as 45 calories. Therefore, they can be eaten in plentiful without packing in too many calories. The water content in the fruit can also contribute to weight loss secondary to creating a &#8220;fullness&#8221; feeling and therefore increasing satiety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Supports the digestive system.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cucumbers contain soluble fiber, which helps keep the bowel and help with movements.<br \/>\nThe high water content also helps with stool consistency and therefore contributes to bowel frequency and passing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The fruit can be easily added to the diet by adding in salads, sandwiches, eating with dips, juicing, making soups and even pickling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Smaller cucumbers are crisper and have finer seeds than the larger ones and may be more appealing. Do not choose cucumbers with blemishes, soft spots, yellowing, or that are easily bent. The best way to store them is in the refrigerator as this prolongs the life longer than storing them on the counter.
